Insertion

Insertion

Year one explores the main strategies we employ when re-using existing buildings working with different briefs informed by the agenda of year two platform pairings Matter & Detail, Process & Nonterior, Re-use & Urbanism and Display & Futures. As a result the ‘insertion’ strategy was used to interrogate four different sites and briefs.

Deploying an insertion strategy can establish a conversation between an existing building and the newly introduced elements. This exchange will often be cordial, as the new components are tailor-made for the particular site. Although the new insertion may be specifically designed for a particular location, it could still provide an opportunity for conflict. As this strategy means there is a direct relationship between the size of the insertion and the space into which it is introduced, the result is a bespoke interior solution that is designed to exist in a single place. Although they are not intended to be relocated, the inserted elements can be removed without unduly affecting the structure they inhabit.
