The turn of the century, increasingly designated as the anthropocene,is characterised by an imbalance where that produced by humankind - wearables, technology,

buildings, cities, vehicles, plastics, consumables and their derived waste - dominate the planet. In a world where humanity’s extraction and production is excessive, how can design disciplines engage with the climate emergency and procurement of wellbeing for future generations? superMATTER identifies the careful consideration of materials as fundamental in reimagining the existing building stock from its strategic position within built environment practice - one of the biggest culprits in creating environmental and social imbalances.

superMATTER is concerned with the stuff intrinsic in the making of space The universality of material experience demands a critical approach to materials legacies, protocols and proximities as integrated in the design process. Beyond cataloguing tangible specifications and designations of materials, this platform develops critical awareness of the intangible aspects of materiality and making that contribute to social inequalities and deplete resources.

superMATTER proposes the intimacy of making, or semiomatter, as a hypothesis of radical change. The proposition is simple: approach space in the making, explore by making, think by making, assess by making, and rejoice in the sensory experience. Above all, it advocates for interior design’s agency to promote climate hope through sensible making.
